Age Differences in Cortical Recruitment to Stereotype Threat and Resiliency for Self-Referenced Information

چکیده

We investigated neural basis of stereotype threat and resiliency, and differences across age groups. Young and older adults judged whether words stereotypical of aging (e.g., frail, wise) and control words (e.g., friendly) described them while being scanned with fMRI. Judging stereotype words versus control words revealed higher activations in regions associated with self-referencing for older adults compared to younger adults. We also showed that older adults tend to employ a more social-comparsion, or contextual form of self-referencing, subserved by activations in posterior cingulate and precuneus, particularly for judgments of stereotype words relative to younger adults. Stereotyped information can detrimentally affect performance when the stereotype is salient and personally relevant. This is commonly known as stereotype threat, and has been shown to have robust effects in aging studies. Being made aware of stereotypes can also lead to a phenomenon called resilience, where older adults use those stereotypes to create downward social comparisons to “other” older adults and elevate their own self-perception. We sought to explore brain regions underlying stereotype threat responses as well as resilience responses. Brain regions that showed significant activation in older adults for threat responses relative to resilient responses included precuneus, which is associated with selfreflective thought, and parahippocampus, which has been implicated in autobiographical memory. These findings have implications for understanding how older adults approach and respond to old-age stereotypes in their daily lives. Additionally, it would be prudent for researchers examining aging to be aware of possible causes and effects of both stereotype threat and resilience, as they can affect performance, and hence, experimental outcomes.

Age Differences in Neural Response to Stereotype Threat and Resiliency for Self-Referenced Information

To investigate the contribution of cortical midline regions to stereotype threat and resiliency, we compared age groups in an event-related functional MRI study. During scanning, 17 younger and 16 older adults judged whether words stereotypical of aging and control words described them. Judging stereotype words versus control words revealed higher activations in posterior midline regions associ...

Stereotype Threat Lowers Older Adults' Self-Reported Hearing Abilities.

BACKGROUND Although stereotype threat is a well-documented phenomenon, previous studies examining it in older adults have almost exclusively focused on objective cognitive outcomes. Considerably less attention has been paid to the impact of stereotype threat on older adults' subjective assessments of their own abilities or to the impact of stereotype threat in noncognitive domains. OBJECTIVE ...

Age differences in the underlying mechanisms of stereotype threat effects.

OBJECTIVES The goals of the present study were to (a) examine whether age differences exist in the mechanisms underlying stereotype threat effects on cognitive performance and (b) examine whether emotion regulation abilities may buffer against threat effects on performance. METHOD Older and younger adults were exposed to positive or negative age-relevant stereotypes, allowing us to examine th...

The impact of stereotype threat on age differences in memory performance.

This study investigated the hypothesis that age differences in memory performance may be influenced by stereotype threat associated with negative cultural beliefs about the impact of aging on memory. Recall was examined in 48 young and 48 older adults under conditions varying in the degree of induced threat. Conditions that maximize threat resulted in lower performance in older adults relative ...

How feelings of stereotype threat influence older adults' memory performance.

The purpose of the present research was to explore the role of stereotype threat as a mediator of older people's memory performance under different instructional sets. In three studies, younger and older participants completed a memory test that was either framed as a memorization or as an impression formation task. Across these studies, memory performance was greater for younger than for older...
